  Recent studies have indicated that the number of students taking up private tuition at a young age is increasing. This trend is especially evident at United Square, a shopping mall situated in Singapore, which is packed with over ten tuition centres. Usually, students would take up private tuition if they are not coping well in school or desire to make progress in their grades.  However, what makes private tuition so attractive? Additionally, what are some downsides to private tuition? Hence, I would expand upon the advantages and disadvantages of private tuition. The advantages of private tuition are that students can learn through different methods and learn values.  The disadvantages are that private tuition may be too expensive and it is stressful for students.

  Firstly, one advantage of private tuition is that students can acquire better through the methods that suit them best. Every student has his best learning approach- students can be auditory, kinetic or visual learners. During tuition sessions, they are able to be taught in the most productive way. Furthermore, in schools, teachers cannot cater to all the students' learning methods, so normally students turn to rote memorisation when revising their work, making learning boring and distasteful. Thus, tuition definitely makes education more stimulating and entrancing for students through diverse techniques. Additionally, students can also understand the content-heavy syllabus to a greater degree as they are showered with more attention from their tutor than school teachers. Therefore, by attending private tuition, students can learn more effectively through various methods.

  Secondly, another advantage is that students can cultivate values and skills. They can also pick up valuable skills such as time management as they have to juggle between school work, co-curricular activities and private tuition. Thus, students can undoubtedly foster favourable values and cultivate their character through tuition as well.

  One of the disadvantages of tuition is that it may be too expensive. To some, private tuition is a luxury because some parents are unable to afford tuition for their children. If their children had no choice but were to take up tuition classes, it would only add to the parents' financial burden.  For instance, tuition fees may be as costly as one thousand dollars per term! This can be supported by a newspaper article that reported some well-liked private tutors in Singapore are earning more than ten thousand dollars a month. Hence, for low income families, private tuition may be too costly to afford.

  Another disadvantage is that private tuition may be overly nerve-racking for students. On top of the tremendous pile of homework they have to deal with daily, students are not spared from tuition either. Therefore, tuition may also be counted as an additional burden for students. After being dismissed from school, students have to rush off to their respective tuition centres to commence a two-hour long tuition session. In order to make way for tuition, students have no choice but to relinquish their precious resting time. They also tend to spend lesser quality time with their family as a result of private tuition, causing them to become physically and mentally drained after lengthy hours of studying and staying up late. Therefore private tuition really proves to be too stressful for students, and in the long run, it may not only take a toll on their mental health but also their physical health.

  To sum it up, private tuition has its fair share of pros and cons. Through private tuition, students can learn through different methods and foster values. On the other hand, private tuition may pose as a burden for both parents and children as it may be too costly to afford and is stressful to students.'
